Readiness to see a therapist can be a difficult decision for some. Normally, people wait till something significant warrants some kind of change in their life before moving forward to find a therapist. Waiting till problems become chronic can sometimes increase the length of therapy. As most physicians suggest, preventive care and catching things early will ensure you a higher success rate. There are many therapists who focus on different issues and use various methods of treatment. Unfortunately there is not a one size fits all for therapists. You might have to do a little shopping around before finding one that will work for you. It is important to remember that “ready” and “comfortable” are not the same thing. Addressing your personal issues will not be comfortable for perhaps weeks into treatment, but when life is in chaos or simply not functioning, you may realize that you are ready to do something about it.
We recommend the directory from The BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. They can provide the names of therapists working in your geographical area and those with the specialization you are needing.
