Training for Professionals
Male Survivors: Making an Informed Response
March 2012 dates set, see below !
Twice per year the Society provides a 2-day training seminar for:
- mental health workers,
- therapists,
- corrections personnel,
- educators,
- counsellors,
- social workers,
- family support workers,
- crisis workers,
- etc.
It is aimed at those who do not specialize in working with adult male survivors, but who have encountered (or who expect to encounter) adult males with sexual abuse in their backgrounds. The seminar provides attendees with an understanding of the special issues of males who were sexually abused as children or sexually assaulted as adults. It equips them to provide initial support that is informed, empowering and sensitive – as well as to make referrals, as appropriate.
There are slight variations in content, usually as a result of the type of majority of attendees. For example, if most attendees are Victim Services Workers, then there will be a little more content focused there.
The seminar combines presentation of information and open discussion. Participants are encouraged to examine their own values, attitudes and experiences, especially in terms of how these might impact their responses to male survivors.
Location
- Vancouver Head Office – March 30th & March 31st.
- Suite 202 – 1252 Burrard Street
The classes starts at 9:00am and will finish by 4:00pm both days. There are breaks for mid-morning, lunch, and mid-afternoon.
