Male Survivors: Preparing The Way For Meaningful Intervention

Semi-annually, Mason Shell (MCP, RCC), Executive Director and Education Coordinator of the BC Society for Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse, provides training for individuals who come across male survivors of sexual abuse in their work.

 

This two-day workshop is designed for a variety of helping professionals. It is aimed at those who do not specialize in providing therapy for adult male survivors but who have encountered, or who expect to encounter, adult males with sexual abuse in their backgrounds. The two-day format will provide participants with an understanding of the special issues of males who were sexually abused as children or sexually assaulted as adults. It will equip participants with knowledge as to how to provide initial support that is trauma-informed, empowering, and sensitive, as well as to make referrals as appropriate. As trauma exists regardless of gender identity, it is important to consider that much of the information applies to survivors living with trauma more generally.

The 2-day training seminar is targeted towards:

  • Therapists
  • Corrections Personnel
  • Educators
  • Counsellors
  • Social Workers
  • Family Support Workers
  • Crisis Workers

  • Misconceptions around Male Survivors
  • Up-to-date Statistics on Male Survivors and Sexual Assault/Abuse more Generally
  • Common Symptoms and Presenting Issues of Male Survivors
  • How Addiction can be understood as a Symptom of Trauma
  • Biology of Trauma and Language/Concepts for Working with Trauma
  • Process of Recovery / Therapeutic Process while Working with Trauma
  • Interventions / Tools / Techniques Effective for Managing Childhood Trauma
  • Self-Care – Burnout, Vicarious Trauma, Compassion Fatigue
    *there will be ample time for discussion and questions throughout

Non-Student $260.00
Student $140.00
